Getting Hired On A Cruise Ship

There are a few different ways to get hired onboard a cruise ship. Let's take a look at the different processes and resources.

1. Firstly, you absolutely have to have a really good CV. There are just too many CV's for any company to go through, so they use a software system that picks up on key words. Should the system find these key words, the CV is filtered into a file for consideration. If none of the key words are found, it is unlikely that your CV will ever be looked at. However, you may already have a great CV and in this case you can proceed to steps 2 and 3.

2. You can apply through the company website. This ensures that your CV goes straight to the source. The downside is that they get a lot of CV's and again, you are reliant on that software system.

3. Most people go through a hiring agency. We have a list of agencies in the recruitment section. Going through a hiring agency gives you a bit more of a chance to meet someone personally. They get paid by the cruise lines for every person that they hire, so it's in their best interest to help you. However, the cruise line has the final say on whether they accept you as a hire from the agency. The benefit to an agency is also the prep that they help you with before you depart. This includes certificates you may need, police background checks, and sometimes a crash course on what life is like onboard. Because make no mistake, life is an absolute whirlwind, especially for the first month to two months. Once you have gotten through your safety training and some on the job training, things start to settle. You get some time off to go out in the ports, you have some energy to go to socialize in the Crew Bar or gym and you begin to feel like you have a place in your new home away from home.
