Do you get the support and mentoring you need? Does anyone talk to you about your future goals? In your first contract, you should be getting support from your team as you learn you new role and adjust to ship life. By contract two, maybe you go after some cross training opportunities. If you're in your third contract and no one has talked to you about where to go next, have that discussion. Ask for honest feedback about what you need to do to develop further. If nothing comes out of it, it might be time for a new cruise line, because let's face it - some crew end up in the same position their entire career. And if you are okay with that, then keep on keeping on. Otherwise, put some accountability on your leader to be....well, a leader.
