Started Ship career in 2016 on Princess as Shop Staff ( Fragrance Specialist) starting salary $1200 + comm. Great company, Guest privileges, Ate in Officers Mess. Great itinerary. Crew bar and parties were a lot of fun.
Left cruise industry and returned in 2021 after Covid on Carnival working for a 3rd party company in shops. Salary $900 + comm however it was almost impossible to reach targets ( no matter how target driven you are) so did not receive a lot off comm at the end of the month.
At Carnival, we had a manager who would talk down to the opposite sex. I had a very negative experience with a guest and the manager didn’t take me seriously. The poor treatment from this manager escalated and it affected me greatly.
I needed to take further steps with the guest situation. I went to HR and Staff captain. They ensured that appropriate steps were taken for my safety.
I then resigned from shops and joined Guest Services for Carnival which was probably the worst decision for me.
You need a supportive team, because it is a difficult demographic of passengers. I had to leave under circumstances beyond my control and look forward to going back fabulous, fit and ready to take on my new position.
Look, being a seafarer is a tough job and unless you have been onboard before, no one would understand, but it is one of the best jobs to have.. we meet and befriend incredible people and we are all able to help, guide and assist each other.
