I had a TERRIBLE contract. I had access to guest areas, never to the dinning room unless requested by a manager.
Food for crew was really bad, We found maggots in the lettuce one time so no more salad for the rest of the contract unless you wash it yourself. this cruise line has a reputation for not spending one cent on crew welfare and they live up to it. The HR manager on board is the only one person in charge of crew welfare so that is only one of their many many other responsibilities, making it a very low priority. They do have a Training and Dev. manager on board that assists with this and their main job is to give tech support for the training app they use now instead of actually training crew, so crew welfare is never a priority.

I have been working on cruise ships since 2007, 6 different companies and by far MSC is the worst in terms of crew life and the way they treat crew members, the company has clearly good intentions by implementing all the necessary policies to improve crew life, but when it comes to enforcing all those policies they fail miserably as they're an Italian company and so if your are an Italian officer with enough stripes, many of them feel thar the rules just do not apply to you. This was made evident every day, there is a very clear and thoroughly repeated policy regarding grooming where the uniforms have to be buttoned to the top and no visible jewelry visible (collars)
well several deck officers LOVE to walk around guest areas displaying their hair chest with some big old golden chain collars, and fraternizing with guests in the bars constantly, when we all know "fraternizing" with guests is one of the biggest no nos in the industry.

As usual, every time you start a new contract you never know if you will have a good manager or a terrible manager, it's always a gamble. This time I had a very bad one,one of those that yells like a crazy person when angry and that allows their emotions dictate their work. They had a terrible English level so communication was hard and they loved using words like "the R word" or "mongoloide" to refer to anyone (crew or guest) that did not understand them.

MSC stands out in their awesome newer ships and the multi lingual environment offered for guests, but really lacks crew welfare.
