Salaries: Broadcast Technician 3100
Recreation Staff: 2000
I am providing two detailed job reviews, having served in the capacities of Recreation Staff for nearly a decade and as a Broadcast Technician for seven months at NCL, with my application successfully approved by the head office.
Despite the absence of cross-training, the acceptance of my application was swift. My experience with NCL has been varied, marked by frequent changes in company policies. My passion has always been in the media and film industry. Working as a Broadcast Technician was a fulfillment of this passion; even after six months, I remained invigorated and willingly extended my tenure as long as NCL required. The twelve-hour shifts, when necessary, were a joy rather than a burden.
Recreation Staff at NCL (2013 - 2022)
Role Overview:
As a Recreation Staff member at NCL, I was responsible for facilitating and overseeing various recreational activities and events for guests aboard the cruise ship. This role required extensive guest interaction, ensuring an enjoyable and safe experience for all participants. The activities included managing the Go Karts (Speedway) and the Galaxy Pavilion (VR experience), which were enjoyable and rarely stressful workplaces.
Broadcast Technician at NCL (2022-2023)
Duties Overview:
As a Broadcast Technician at NCL, my responsibilities included managing and operating the ship's broadcasting equipment and systems. This role involved handling live broadcasts, recording events, and ensuring high-quality audio and visual outputs for the ship's entertainment and informational channels.
Reason for Leaving the Company:
Despite my enthusiasm and dedication, an issue arose when an officer questioned my expertise. They frequently convened meetings that felt prosecutorial, going to great lengths to communicate doubts about my preparedness to the head office. This was despite my proven land-based experience in television. The head office allowed me to complete my contract and extended it because there was no replacement, meaning I managed the broadcast center on my own. Throughout this period, my role remained in the system, and my next assignment was still in broadcasting. I disembarked in Feb 2023.
Upon returning from vacation in Apr 2023, I discovered that my broadcast contract had been terminated without prior notification. This discovery was made when I joined the ship in Miami, only to be informed that I had been dismissed from the Broadcast Technician role. The process of finding out was fraught with challenges. Initially, my role was unclear even to the shipboard HR, who had to email the head office to regenerate a contract. Although I was allowed to revert to my previous responsibilities as Recreation Staff, this breach of contract was the final straw. NCL offered me the Recreation Staff role on the spot, with a "take it or leave it" attitude. I had confirmed with the head office prior to signing on, and all my joining documents reflected my dream broadcasting responsibilities. Thus, there was no way for me to know I had been dismissed. The contract was stamped by multiple people, the salary included a generous raise, and I had just renewed my medicals. To this day, I wonder when the decision to terminate my contract was made and find it hard to believe that a company could be so disorganized.
A company that does not honor the contracts it issues is not one I wish to be associated with. If they do not honor a contract, which is the heart of everything, what else can they be expected to honor?
Lifestyle on an NCL Ship:
Living and working on an NCL ship presents unique challenges and experiences. The food quality is a notable aspect. While the paid restaurants on NCL ships are among the best at sea, there is a stark contrast when it comes to the guest buffet. The food in the crew and staff messes often seems provided merely to prevent starvation. One might lose weight due to the gradual distaste for the food, leading to eating only the essentials. On larger ships, the crew mess is more acceptable, and there are times when the food is actually great, which helps one survive a contract.
However, I usually had my meals at the buffet. With NCL gradually making the buffet off-limits fleetwide, I am uncertain if I would be able to manage. This limitation on dining options adds another layer of difficulty to an already challenging lifestyle aboard.
I left in May 2023, following the "Oops, looks like you've been fired, but let's give you a job since you are here" episode. This experience, coupled with the challenges of shipboard life, ultimately led to my decision to seek opportunities elsewhere.
