Cruise line: Viking
Department: Botique staff
Salary: 975 plus commission
Duration: 6 months
We live in shared cabin and eat at the staff mess, the crew bar is in open deck but dont really like going there because the smoking and non smoking area is separated by just a line on the floor nothing much..An easy cruiseline to work for incase of pressure because you dont push for sales and get a lot of port days and you can sign up to be escort in guest tours. We have ipm and embarkation duty and our uniform is washes for us.
Its a generally strict cruiseline in grooming standards as men have to trim all their beards and also have a strict alcohol policy. In my last ship most crew were unfriendly as compared to the last cruiseline i was on.
My ship was Viking Neptune. It was a brand new ship so I started off in the boat yard in setting up. My department was the shops employed by Harding Brothers. It was a good experience. The shops get a lot of free time because we cannot open in ports but there are days we have to stay and help different departments of the ship. The pay is not good and the commission system should be revised because it’s not better. In a sales position you know there is a basic but when thinking of commission it is suppose to help boost the basic but that’s not the case. If you looking for money not shops department, if you want to travel, explore new places and meet amazing people then hell yes go for it. It all depends on your manager and your team members at the time will determine what type of contract you have. There are some good team mates and managers but the one I got first was from hell. They always found faults in everything at one point I thought they were targeting me. Thanks god they no longer work with the company. As a shoppie you have access to officers mess, you can eat on the buffet at 8:00pm when you are not on the clock. You start work at 10:00am on a sea day and end at 10:00pm. There are a number of over nights in ports which make you enjoy the ports a lot more. There are crew parties and crew recognition dinners, talent shows, bingo and sports competitions as well. All in all Viking is an amazing company to work for no matter the department. It’s a big family away from your own family and you can feel it all around.
